January 5: from Gary Newsom: "Who wants to drive a Grandmaster? On Friday January 27, the start day of Land of the Sky, GM Gareev will be landing at the Charlotte airport at 11:15AM (possibly accompanied by IM Almeida of Mexico). They need a ride to Asheville for the tournament. They would also need a ride back on Sunday night. There is a 6:35AM Monday morning flight that they will have to catch. Is anyone interested in helping out with this? It will give you a good bit of face time with one of the top players in the United States! I have met GM Gareev and he is a very personable and funny young guy. If you are interested, send me an e-mail to gary.newsom@queencitychess.com"

The match was very close, up to the last game! The Columbia team was a fine host, everyone had a good time, and the playing conditions were very good.
